This powerful herbal extract is particularly well-known for its benefits in men’s health, offering a natural approach to managing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), androgen imbalances, and age-related hair loss.
The History and Traditional Uses of Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto has a long history of use in Native American medicine, particularly by the Seminole tribe in Florida. Traditionally, the berries were used to treat a variety of conditions, ranging from reproductive issues to urinary tract problems. Today, saw palmetto is best known for its ability to support male health, especially in relation to prostate and hormonal issues.
Modern research has validated many of these traditional uses, showing that saw palmetto is a safe and effective natural remedy for promoting urinary function, managing symptoms of BPH, and potentially supporting hair growth in both men and women.

Prostate Health and Management of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
One of the most well-researched benefits of saw palmetto is its ability to support prostate health and alleviate symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a common condition that affects men as they age, characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland, which can lead to uncomfortable urinary symptoms, such as frequent urination, difficulty starting or maintaining urine flow, and incomplete bladder emptying.
Saw palmetto works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Elevated levels of DHT are associated with prostate enlargement and hair loss. By reducing the production of DHT, saw palmetto helps alleviate the symptoms of BPH and may even slow the progression of prostate enlargement.
A study published in The Journal of Urology found that saw palmetto extract was as effective as finasteride, a common pharmaceutical treatment for BPH, in reducing urinary symptoms and improving urinary flow in men with mild to moderate BPH. Unlike pharmaceutical options, however, saw palmetto is associated with fewer side effects, making it a safer alternative for long-term use.
Hormonal Balance and Androgen Regulation
Saw palmetto’s ability to inhibit DHT production also makes it useful for balancing hormone levels in both men and women. DHT is not only a key factor in prostate enlargement but is also linked to conditions like androgenic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness) and acne.
In men, elevated DHT levels can contribute to hair loss, particularly in genetically predisposed individuals. By reducing the conversion of testosterone to DHT, saw palmetto helps lower DHT levels, potentially slowing or preventing hair loss. For women, saw palmetto may help alleviate symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition characterized by high androgen levels, which can lead to irregular periods, acne, and hair thinning.
A review published in Phytotherapy Research highlighted saw palmetto’s role in modulating androgen activity, noting that its ability to lower DHT levels may help manage androgen-related conditions in both men and women. This makes saw palmetto a valuable natural remedy for supporting hormonal balance and reducing the impact of androgenic imbalances.
Hair Loss Prevention and Promotion of Hair Growth
Saw palmetto is often included in hair growth formulations due to its potential to reduce DHT, the hormone linked to hair loss. Androgenic alopecia, commonly known as male or female pattern baldness, is caused by the miniaturization of hair follicles due to the effects of DHT. By blocking the production of DHT, saw palmetto can help slow the progression of hair loss and potentially promote hair regrowth.
A study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that men who took a saw palmetto supplement for six months experienced a significant increase in hair growth compared to those who took a placebo. While more research is needed to fully understand the effects of saw palmetto on hair growth, early evidence suggests that it can be a useful natural alternative to pharmaceutical treatments like finasteride for addressing hair loss.
Urinary Function and Bladder Health
In addition to supporting prostate health, saw palmetto has been shown to improve urinary function in both men and women. By reducing inflammation in the urinary tract and relaxing the muscles around the bladder, saw palmetto can help alleviate symptoms like urinary urgency, frequency, and incomplete bladder emptying.
For men with BPH, saw palmetto’s ability to improve urinary flow and reduce nighttime urination (nocturia) is particularly beneficial. A study published in Urology found that men who took a saw palmetto supplement experienced significant improvements in urinary symptoms, including reduced nocturia and increased urinary flow rate.
Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties
Beyond its effects on hormones and urinary health, saw palmetto also offers powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. Chronic inflammation is a contributing factor in many health conditions, including prostate enlargement, urinary tract issues, and even hair loss. Saw palmetto’s anti-inflammatory properties help reduce inflammation in the prostate and urinary tract, providing relief from symptoms and promoting long-term health.
A study published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research demonstrated that saw palmetto extract has potent anti-inflammatory effects, inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, saw palmetto contains antioxidant compounds that help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative damage. This antioxidant activity supports cellular health and may contribute to the herb’s overall health-promoting effects.
Safe and Well-Tolerated for Long-Term Use
One of the key advantages of saw palmetto is its excellent safety profile. It is generally well-tolerated by most individuals, with minimal side effects reported even with long-term use. Some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort when taking saw palmetto, but this can often be mitigated by taking the supplement with food.
Because saw palmetto interacts with hormone levels, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare provider before use, especially for individuals taking hormone-related medications or those with underlying health conditions. However, for most people, saw palmetto offers a safe and effective natural option for supporting prostate health, hormonal balance, and urinary function.
Conclusion
Saw Palmetto Berry is a powerful, natural remedy with a rich history of use for supporting men’s health, particularly in relation to prostate function and hormone regulation. Its ability to inhibit DHT production not only supports prostate health and alleviates symptoms of BPH but also offers potential benefits for hair growth and hormonal balance in both men and women. At Akasha Naturals, we include saw palmetto in our formulations to help individuals maintain optimal health, particularly in the areas of urinary and reproductive function.
With a strong body of research supporting its efficacy, saw palmetto remains a valuable ingredient for anyone looking to support prostate health, reduce hair loss, and promote overall well-being naturally.
